Power Train Preliminary Designs

Designs and Process

Our group was tasked with developing a system to disperse and provide power to all the other systems. The input would provide us with a certain amount of power and it was our responsibility to figure out how to efficiently and safely get the entire machine to move.

Pulley and wheel system

Description:

Using a pulley and wheel system to distribute the force necessary to operate the individual subsystems of the machine.

Pros:

  • lightweight
  • simplicity

Cons:

  • slippage
  • stretching of belts

Chain and Gear system

Description:

Similar to the pulley system, the gear system will use gear ratios and chains to distribute the force necessary to individual subsystems.

Pros:

  • low to no slippage
  • no stretching over time
  • easy to modify gear ratios

Cons:

  • heavier
  • possibly noisy

Pnuematic system

Description:

Maybe our most adventurous idea. We would power our system through the application of compressed air through hoses to localized actuators to operate the individual subsystems.

Pros:

  • Flexibility/easy set up
  • smaller size for distribution

Cons:

  • supplying compressed air (power consumption)
  • can be very loud
